Salobo Metais, a company within the Vale Group, is one of the largest copper plants in the world. Located in Pará - Brazil, the plant produces between 210,000 and 250,000 tons annually.

The flotation process is a critical stage in mining, where the separation of minerals occurs. It is a harsh, hard-to-access environment that requires specific mechanical and electrical designs to ensure the drive systems can withstand extreme operating conditions, while minimizing the need for maintenance interventions.

To mitigate the impact of solid and liquid particle contamination on electric motors used in flotation cells, WEG specified motors from the W51 HD Mining line, featuring IP66 protection rating.

These motors underwent mechanical and electrical customizations that resulted in a surface temperature reduction of over 68ºF. This contributes to extended motor lifespan and reduces the risk of bearing and shaft failures. Additionally, it allowed for longer intervals between predictive maintenance, leading to increased productivity and greater system reliability. All of this was achieved without the need for additional investment or structural modifications to the flotation cells.

The solid partnership between WEG and Vale reflects the synergy between two industrial giants, united by shared goals of efficiency and innovation.
